In the authors group the optical properties of porous GaP were studied extensively and some interesting differences between the bulk and porous semiconductor were reported. (Erne, B.H. et al. 1995, 1996) During the investigations, they looked for quantum size effects, such as a blueshift of the absorption edge and a change in the emission spectrum. However, no evidence was found, although they observed the same blue and UV emission reported by other authors they concluded that this emission results from a surface layer of gallium oxide on the porous material. In this paper evidence to support this assignment is presented. 22 Refs.

Two types of sensors were prepared. In one, Tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) dichloride was adsorbed on to silica gel, which was then entrapped in polysiloxane. In the other, tris(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline)ruthenium(II) perchlorate was dissolved in poly(styrene). Both products were coated on to a 0.1 mm polyester sheet and were performance tested in O2/N2. Detection was with a commercial SPEX Fluorolog II fluorometer. Lifetimes were measured by a dye laser pulse method. Both sensors had non-linear calibration graphs (Stern-Volmer plots), but there were differences in the decay curves of the excited states. The phenanthroline sensor also showed marked effects due to concentration and thermal history; mechanisms are discussed.
